Second Half Rally Fuels Cardinals 68-65 Victory Over Southern Indiana

The William Jewell College women's basketball team hosted University of Southern Indiana today in Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball action.  The Cardinals came away with their biggest win of the season stopping Southern Indiana's eight game winning streak 68-65. 

The win moves the Cardinals to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC while Southern Indinana falls to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in GLVC play.
 
The Screaming Eagles built a six point lead after the first quarter on the heel's a three 3-point shots and forced six turnovers of Jewell. 
 
The Cardinals then came out and went on a 9-2 run in the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-20.  Southern Indiana followed that with a run of their own an 8-0 run to build the lead back to 29-20 midway through the second quarter. 
 
Jewell went on another mini-run of 5-0 before the Screaming Eagles answered with a three and would go into halftime with a 34-27 lead.  Both teams struggled from the field as the Cardinals shot 32 percent while USI shot 31 percent.
 
Southern Indiana's Hannah Wascher proved to be a lot for the Cardinals to handle as she finished the first half with a double double scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. 
 
The Cardinals forced five turnovers in Southern Indiana's first six possessions of the third but only cut the lead to five.  Megan Paul's hot three point shooting however, would bring the Cardinals all the way back and Jewell would go into the fourth with a 51-50 lead. 
 
The Cardinals continued to pressure and force more Screaming Eagle turnovers in the fourth and built a 56-50 lead midway through the quarter. 
 
Kelsey Nickerson fueled the Cardinals with two three's and a free throw to put Jewell up 65-60 with 2:45 to play. 
 
Tanner Marcum's three cut Jewell's lead to two 65-63  with 20 seconds to play.  Logan Antenen hit one of two free throws to put Jewell up by three.  After USI cut the lead to one on a lay up Jewell then got the ball back with 7 seconds to play and Maddie Nelson went to the free throw line and hit both free throws and USI's heave from near half court fell short to give Jewell the victory. 
 
Nickerson and Madison Campbell led the Cardinals in scoring with 10 a piece. 
 
The Cardinals forced 16 turnovers including 11 in the second half.
 
The Cardinals will travel to Lebanon, Ill., on Thursday evening to take on McKenree University in another GLVC matchup.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
