The William Jewell volleyball team rallied from a set down on two separate occasions on Friday evening but fell in five to Indianapolis 16-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 12-15. The loss drops the Cardinals to 11-17 overall and 4-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Jewell struggled in the opening set, falling behind by as many as eight at 20-12. The Cardinals played nearly even with UIndy over the final nine points but the deficit was too large as the Greyhounds took the opener 25-16. For the second consecutive game, Jewell started the night with a negative attack percentage as they committed nine errors in the opening set to the tune of a -.023 clip.
The Cardinals bounced back in set two as they opened a 7-2 advantage, forcing a timeout by the Greyhounds. Despite a rally by UIndy that tied the game at 12, Jewell went on a 5-0 run to expand the lead back to 17-12 behind two kills a piece from
Madeline Johnson and
Raechel Meisinger. The Greyhounds rallied again and pulled within in one and kept things interesting late in the set but kills from
Stefanie Richterkessing and
Paige Cunningham closed things out 25-22. Jewell was much more efficient offensively hitting .244, led by Meisinger with six kills in the set.
After the intermission, Jewell came out flat allowing UIndy to grab an 11-5 advantage before scoring six of the next seven points to pull within 11-12 on a kill from
Leslie Booth. The Greyhounds went on a five point run, aided by three Cardinal errors to take a 19-13 lead on their way to taking the set 25-21.
Set four was a back-and-forth affair until a 6-1 Cardinal run, capped by a Richterkessing kill, gave Jewell a 15-10 advantage. The two teams traded points the rest of the way as the Cards took the 25-19 win and forced the fifth and deciding set. Set four saw Jewell hit a match-high .391 which was necessary as the Greyhounds hit .290.
Set five opened with UIndy taking a 4-1 lead before committing three errors and helping Jewell tie the set at four. The Cardinals continued to roll as Johnson put in two kills and Cunningham one, to push Jewell ahead 7-5 and forcing a Greyhound timeout. The Cardinals held a lead late in the set at 11-10 before UIndy put together a 4-1 run to take a 14-12 lead. A Cardinal error gave Indianapolis a 15-12 set win and ultimately the match. The Cardinals managed just a .191 attack percentage in the final set compared to a .292 mark by the Greyhounds.
The tale of two sides was the story for Jewell on the match as they combined to hit .526 with 31 kills and six blocks in the two sets they won compared to .027 with just two blocks in the three losses.
Overall, Jewell was led by Cunningham and Johnson with 11 kills and five blocks a piece while Meisinger added ten kills.
Grace Miller chipped in four blocks while
Amy Lindhorst was tops with 28 assists.
Defensively,
Olivia Tolberd's 26 digs led three players with double-figures as
Stefanie Richterkessing added 15 and
Kennedy Ruckh13.
The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at Saint Joseph's College at 3:00 p.m.
