Jewell Falls at Saint Joseph's

The William Jewell volleyball team was swept by Saint Joseph's College on Saturday afternoon on the road. The Cardinals fell 25-23, 25-23, 25-22. The loss drops Jewell to 11-18 overall and 4-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Jewell managed just a .115 attack percentage on the day as they committed 21 errors. Raechel Meisinger and Mary Booton were tops on the team with seven kills. Meisinger was the most efficient Cardinal as she posted a .400 attack percentage, committing just one error on 15 attempts.

In the opening set, Jewell opened an 18-14 lead before the Pumas scored six of the next seven to pull ahead 20-19. A kill from Booton tied the set at 20 but the Cards were outscored 3-2 over the final five points to fall 25-23.

In set two Jewell fell behind 15-11 before scoring five consecutive points on kills from Booton, Grace Miller, and Madeline Johnson to regain the lead 16-15. Saint Joseph's went back on top 21-19 after two Jewell errors but a kill from Jenna Rau tied the game at 22. The Pumas scored three consecutive points to take the set 25-23 and a 2-0 advantage at the break.

Following the intermission, Jewell grabbed a 7-6 lead before allowing Saint Joseph's a 5-0 run, aided by three errors, to pull ahead 11-7. The Cardinals battled back with a 8-1 run, led by Meisinger's three kills, to take a 16-15 lead. The advantage was short lived as the Pumas again pulled ahead on Jewell errors 21-19. Another Meisinger kill helped the Cards within one to force a Saint Joseph's timeout but a kill and Jewell error ended the set 25-22.

The Cardinals struggled in serve receive, allowing seven aces by the Pumas but did out-block SJC 7-5 led by four from Johnson. Olivia Tolberd posted a game-high tying 19 digs while Kennedy Ruckh and Stefanie Richterkessing added eight a piece.

The Cardinals will return home for the final three games of the 2016 season as they host No. 24 Rockhurst on Tuesday, followed by Truman State on Friday and Quincy on Saturday.
