The William Jewell College women's basketball team fell 56-54 to the University of Indianapolis in a low scoring contest Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center. The Cardinals drop to the 10-16 on the year and 5-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the loss. The victory improves the Greyhounds to 7-18 on the year and 5-10 in conference play.
The Greyhounds held the lead for the entirety of the first half, aided by 19 first half points from Sarah Costello. The Cardinals surged back and briefly take the lead in the third quarter on a three from Blair Klostermann. Indianapolis regained the lead, but the Cardinals pushed to within two on a three from Zinka Duric with under a minute to play in the game. Jewell had a chance to win the game on a last second three point attempt, but the shot fell just short.
The Cardinals played stifling defense all game, forcing 16 turnovers but was unable to take advantage due to poor shooting from the field, recording a 34 percent clip on the afternoon.Â
Klostermann spearheaded the Cardinal offense, scoring 15 points behind three three pointers on the afternoon. Maddie Nelson chipped in 13 points for the Cardinals.Â
Costello was the leading scorer for the Greyhounds, scoring 19 of her 21 points in the first half. Princess German contributed 17 points for Indianapolis.Â
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., when they take on Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.
