Cardinals Sweep Day Two of NSU Softball Festival

Senior pitcher Shelby McGraw tossed 14 innings of work, allowing just one run to lead the William Jewell softball team to a day two sweep at the NSU Softball Festival in Tahlequah, Okla. on Saturday. The Cardinals started the day with a 5-0 win over Lindenwood, followed by a 4-1 victory over Midwestern State (Texas) to move to 4-4 on the season.

In the opener, the Cards got three straight singles from Maddie Greenstreet, Madi Giles, and Nona Pauline, to load the bases with no outs. Brooke Bernard and Phoebe Dabbour each grounded out to second base to put Jewell up 2-0 at the end of the third inning.

In the fifth inning it was again Bernard who singled down the left field line scoring Giles, followed by an RBI single from Aerin Creamer to score Pauline.

McGraw helped her own cause by blasting a solo home run in the sixth inning to push the score to the final margin of 5-0.

Against the Lions Pauline, Bernard, and McGraw all posted two hits.

In the final game of the weekend, Midwestern State jumped out to an early lead as a wild pitch scored the Mustangs only run in the bottom of the second inning.

Jewell tied the game off an RBI single from Creamer in the top of the fourth. The Cardinals took advantage of miscues by the Mustangs, scoring two more runs on a bases loaded walk and a passed ball before McGraw doubled in the top of the fifth inning to score Dabbour and earn the 4-1 win.

Against Midwestern State, Bernard and Morgan Olson grabbed two hits a piece, including a triple from Olson.

McGraw took the win in both games to move to 3-1 on the young season as she went 14 innings (20.1 total on the weekend), allowing just one run, ten hits, and one walk, while striking out six.

Up next the Cardinals will travel to Rosemont, Ill. to take part in the Lewis Dome Invitational on February 26-27. Jewell will matchup region opponents with Ashland University and Upper Iowa on Friday, followed by Walsh and Grand Valley State on Saturday. All games will be played inside The Dome at the Ballpark.
