The William Jewell women's basketball team fell on the road at Rockhurst University 75-70 on Thursday evening. The Cardinals finish the season 10-19 and 5-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Rockhurst jumped out to a 23-13 lead at the end of the first quarter before the Cardinals outscored the Hawks 27-10 in the second quarter to take a 40-33 lead in to the halftime break.
At the start of the second half the Hawks battled back and took a 49-48 lead at the 4:10 mark of the third quarter. The two teams traded points over the next eight minutes until the Hawks began to pull away with six minutes to play. A layup by Mary Dineen gave Rockhurst their largest lead of the of the second half at seven.
The Cardinals missed two layups with under 20 seconds to play to give the Hawks the five point win.
Freshman
Blair Klostermann, returning from an injury, led five players in double-figures with 18 points and five rebounds on 7-15 from the floor. Senior
Logan Antenen put in 14 points, while
Maddie Nelson added 12 and
Chris Keys 11, and
Madison Campbell 10. Nelson and Keys each also pulled down eight rebounds.
The Cardinals will lose four seniors in Antenen,
Zinka Durice,
Makenzie Johnson, and
Kelsey Nickerson while they will return 13, including three full time starters, Nelson, Campbell, and Klostermann.
