Cardinals Top UW-Parkside on the Road to Win Third Consecutive

The William Jewell women's basketball will head into their toughest test of the season on a roll. The Cardinals topped Wisconsin-Parkside 67-64 on Thursday night on the road to win their third consecutive, and move to 10-13 on the season, 5-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Cardinals came out flat, falling behind by as many as 11 early in the second quarter before mounting a comeback. Sophomore Meagan Paul nailed two deep three point shots followed by one from Katie Finn, all from nearly the same spot on the floor to bring Jewell back within one at 30-29 with 1:10 to play in the half. After surviving three offensive boards by the Rangers, Maddie Nelson grabbed a rebound off a missed free throw and hit a jumper with two seconds remaining to put the Cardinals up by one at the break (31-30).

The ladies in red outscored Wisconsin-Parkside 20-11 in the second quarter, doing much of their damage from behind the three point line.

The Rangers regained the lead at 41-38 with 4:11 to play in the third quarter following free throws from Bailey North, before it was again Paul who hit a big three pointer to put the Cardinals back on top.

A Ranger technical foul led to free throws by Finn and a bucket from Blair Klostermann which put Jewell up four with under seven minutes to play. The two teams traded baskets over the next four minutes before UWP's Tara Knapstein tied the game at 57 with 3:06 to go. Over the final minutes the Cardinals scored ten points, including going 6-8 from the free throw line, to put the game out of reach.

Freshman Madison Campbell poured in a career-high 21 points on 7-14 shooting and 7-9 from the free throw line. After a slow start, Nelson put in 18, including 14 in the second half, to go along with a team high seven rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Paul also chipped in nine going 3-5 from behind the arc. Nine different players scored in the game for the Cardinals.

Up next Jewell travels to Romeoville, Ill. for a showdown with No. 8 Lewis University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
