Box ScoreFor the first time in three years, the William Jewell College men's tennis team claimed a season-opening victory as the Cardinals knocked off NAIA Concordia University (Seward, Neb.) 6-3 on Friday afternoon at the indoor courts at Clayview Country Club in Kansas City, Mo.Â
Jewell (1-0) won all three of the doubles matches and then three of the six in the singles round to earn the win.
Amery Clews teamed with Marc Gartner at the No. 1 doubles spot and the duo took an 8-2 victory. At No. 2 doubles, seniors
Isaac Hamilton and
Dean Pinhas combined for an 8-3 win while sophomore
Brian Wohlers and freshman
Jacob Plant rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Wohlers would clinch the match for the Cardinals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tommy McNish at No. 6 singles. Gartner collected a win at the No. 2 position 6-1, 6-1 over Thomas Greeff and Pinhas earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Patricio Esquival. Â Marco Martinez and Hamilton both battled after dropping first sets to force a third set tiebreaker but both players fell by scores of 10-2 and 10-1 respectively.Â
Jewell will be back on the courts Friday, February 19 when they travel to Grand Island, Neb., to face Nebraska-Kearney at 2:00 p.m.
