Cardinals Fall Twice at Saint Joseph's to Open GLVC Play

The William Jewell softball team opened the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference season with two losses on the road at Saint Joseph's College 2-0, and 4-3 in nine innings. The losses drop the Cardinals to 6-10 overall, 0-2 in the GLVC. The Pumas improved to 5-16, and 2-0 in the league.

In the opener the Jewell bats were held relatively silent as Saint Joseph's Morgan Akre and Morgan Masters combined to limit the Cardinals to just four hits, one each from Madi Giles, Aerin Creamer, Phoebe Dabbour, and Megan Barnes.

All the scoring took place in the Puma's half of the fourth inning as Kalen Davis reached and advanced all the way to third on a Jewell error, which allowed two Saint Joseph's runners to score.

As good as Akre was for SJC, Jewell senior Shelby McGraw was even better, despite taking the loss. McGraw tossed a complete game allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out four, and fell to 4-6 on the season.

In game two Jewell brought some life back into their offense in the early innings. In the top of the first Nona Pauline singled and later scored on a Puma error to put the Cards up 1-0. Saint Joseph's responded with two runs to take a 2-1 lead after one complete.

The Cardinals tied the contest at two in the top of the fifth as Barnes and Giles both singled, along with Pauline reaching on an error, to load the bases for Brooke Bernard. Bernard reached on a fielder's choice to score Barnes and knot the game at two.

The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead in the top of the next inning on an RBI fielder's choice by McGraw that scored Ellie Ottensmeyer. Down to their final three outs, the Pumas tied the game at three to force extra innings.

Both teams went quietly in the eighth and SJC forced Jewell into three quick outs in the top of the ninth. In the bottom half of the frame Jewell suffered their third walkoff loss in the past four games as a double followed by sacrifice bunt and single to right field scored the winning run and gave the Pumas the 4-3 victory.

In the nightcap the Cardinals recorded six hits, one a piece from Pauline, Giles, Dabbour, McGraw, Barnes, and Anna Biondo. Bernard recorded one of the two Cardinal RBI while also swiping a base.

In the circle, sophomore Taylor Friesen took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year, going five and one-third innings allowing two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.

The Cardinals continue GLVC play tomorrow on the road as they take on No. 2 Indianapolis for a double-header beginning at noon.
