Jewell Softball Holds Off Rockhurst for GLVC Sweep

The William Jewell softball team swept a double header from Rockhurst University on Tuesday afternoon in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals took game one 8-2 and the nightcap 4-3. With the sweep, Jewell moves to 13-17 on the season, and 5-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Rockhurst, meanwhile, drops to 10-22, 3-11 in the GLVC.

In the opener, Rockhurst jumped on the board early with a run in the top of the first. The Cardinals responded as Madi Giles led off with a double and came around to score on a single from Phoebe Dabbour.

The Hawks regained the 2-1 lead in the top of the third on an RBI groundout. Brooke Bernard tied things up with a solo home run in bottom of the frame.

An inning later, Jewell exploded for five runs, all coming with two outs. Megan Barnes started the rally with a single followed by walks to Maddie Greenstreet, Giles, and Pauline to give Jewell a 3-2 lead with the bases loaded. Bernard then delivered the big blow with a bases clearing double to right centerfield and push the Cardinal lead to 6-3. Dabbour singled to center and was thrown out at second, but not before Bernard scored the Cardinal's seventh run.

Jewell tacked on another run in the sixth as Greenstreet singled and came around to score on a double from Pauline.

Bernard led the Cardinal offense with two extra base hits, four RBI, and two runs scored. Dabbour and Anna Biondo each posted two hits, while Pauline totaled two RBI, and Giles two runs scored.

Shelby McGraw tossed her eleventh complete game of the season, allowing just five hits and two walks, while striking out five.

In the nightcap, it was Jewell that jumped on top first with three runs in the third inning. It was again Barnes who started the rally with a double to right field, followed by a two run home run by Giles to put Jewell in front 2-0. Back-to-back doubles from Pauline and Bernard put another run on the board and pushed the margin to 3-0.

Rockhurst put two runs up in the fourth after a walk and home run to pull within 3-2.

In the sixth, Greenstreet fouled off three pitches before putting a ball over the right centerfield fence to give Jewell an insurance run going into the the seventh inning.

McGraw, who came on in relief in the sixth, allowed runners to reach scoring position leading to the game ending in exciting fashion. A single through the right side scored one run, followed by the Hawks attempting to scoring the second runner. The trail runner was cut down on the throw from senior right fielder Morgan Olson to catcher Aerin Creamer to get the out and end the game.

Biondo earned the win to move to 4-3 on the season, after going five-plus innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with one strikeout. McGraw earned her second save of the season.

Bernard and Pauline led Jewell with two hits each, while Giles recorded two RBI.

The Cardinals continue GLVC play this weekend as they travel to southern Missouri, to take on Drury University on Saturday and Missouri S&T on Sunday.
