The William Jewell softball team split a double header at Lewis University on Sunday afternoon drop the opener 7-1 followed by a 8-5 win in game two. The split takes the Cardinals to 22-24 overall and 12-14 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers moved to 18-28, 6-20 in the GLVC.
In the opener, Lewis jumped out fast, scoring all seven of their runs over the first three innings on nine hits and two Cardinal errors. Jewell managed to plate two runs, one each in the fourth and fifth frames.
Shelby McGraw's solo home run got Jewell on the board before
Madi Giles scored on a Flyer error in the following inning.
As a team the Cardinals were outhit 12-7 with McGraw having two. Lewis pitcher Dara Sanders held the Cardinals relatively quiet striking out six and stranding five.
McGraw took the loss for Jewell after allowing seven runs, only four earned, on 12 hits.
Much like the day before, after dropping the opener, the Cardinals bounced back with a strong game two, scoring four runs in the first two innings capped by a three-run second. A walk to
Nona Pauline, who was pinch ran for by
Ellie Ottensmeyer, opened the gates as Ottensmeyer immediately swiped second and scored on a single from
Aerin Creamer. Creamer, who has been swinging a hot bat as of late, then scored on a single from Giles.
Maddie Greenstreet grabbed a third consecutive RBI single to give Jewell a 4-0 advantage after two frames.
An RBI walk in the fourth, followed by a two run home run off the bat of
Phoebe Dabbour gave Jewell a 7-0 lead before the Flyers made a push, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Another home run, this time from
Nona Pauline gave Jewell an extra insurance run and pushed the score to 8-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh. The Flyers scored two more runs before McGraw returned to the circle to record the final out and secure the 8-5 win.
Freshman
Anna Biondo earned the win, her third in a row, after going six and two-thirds innings, allowing 15 hits but holding the Flyers at bay as she stranded ten baserunners. McGraw earned her third save of the season.
Giles, Greenstreet, Pauline, and Dabbour each posted two hits, while the latter recorded four RBI.
The Cardinals play thier final midweek game on Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Wichita, Kan. to take on Newman University for a double header beginning at 2:00 p.m.
