Cardinals Edge Missouri S&T for Road Sweep

Shelby McGraw tossed a two hit shutout in game one and Nona Pauline a big three run home run in game two to lead the William Jewell softball team to a sweep of Missouri S&T on Sunday afternoon, 1-0 and 6-5 in nine innings. With the wins, the Cardinals move to 16-18 overall and 8-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Miners drop to 11-26 and 3-15 in the GLVC.

In the opener each team had early chances to score as the Cards and Miners combined to leave 14 runners on base. In the top of the fifth Madi Giles walked and advanced to second on an error by the catcher. With two outs Pauline came through with an RBI single to to left field, scoring Giles.

That would be all the offense could muster as Jewell posted just six hits, led by McGraw with two. Brooke Bernard also reached base three times with a single and two walks.

McGraw (9-10) went the distance, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out four Miner batters. Kati Viets (5-13) took the loss for Missouri S&T.

Game two began much like the first as the two teams were scoreless until the fourth inning when the Miners put two runs on the board on three hits and a Cardinal error.

Jewell got a run back after Bernard reached on a fielder's choice followed by singles from McGraw and Pauline to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

In the top of the sixth Aerin Creamer lead off the inning with a single and was pinch ran for by Ellie Ottensmeyer. With two outs Maddie Greenstreet singled to left center, scoring Ottensmeyer and tying the game at two.

Neither team could score in the seventh inning forcing the game into extras.

After scoring just three runs over the previous 15 innings, the Cardinals exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth.

Giles doubled and came around to score on a single from Bernard to give Jewell the 3-2 lead. A walk to McGraw put two on for Nona Pauline who blasted a shot to left centerfield to give the Cardinals insurance, leading 6-2, heading into the bottom of the ninth.

The three runs off the bat of Pauline proved necessary as Missouri S&T did not go quietly however scoring three runs and bring the final margin to 6-5 Jewell.

Greenstreet led the offense with three hits while Pauline posted three RBI, and McGraw two runs. Pauline, Creamer, and Anna Biondo all each had a multi-hit game with two a piece.

McGraw (10-10) earned the win on her second complete game of the day. Over the nine innings she allowed ten hits and four walks but just two earned runs.

The Cardinals will take a short break from GLVC play on Tuesday as they travel to Emporia State for a double header beginning at 2:00 p.m.
