The William Jewell women's basketball team jumped back into Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday night as they traveled to Southern Indiana. The Cardinals struggled offensively majority of the contest and fell 57-39 to drop to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in GLVC play. The Screaming Eagles improved to 11-2 and 3-0 in the league.
One bright spot on the evening was
Maddie Nelson, who not only posted her fourth double-double of the season with a team high 13 points and ten rebounds, but also became the 20th member of Jewell's 1,000 point club. The senior needed just two points to reach the milestone but was forced to wait as she hit a free throw at the 7:31 mark of the second quarter to surpass the 1,000 point plateau.
Overall the Cardinals shot a dismal 23.5 percent from the floor, connecting on just 12 field goals, including a season-low two from behind the three point line. The Screaming Eagle defense was suffocating from the opening tip, forcing Jewell into 22 turnovers.
The Cardinals fell into a 16-6 hole after one quarter and could never recover, trailing by as many as 24 by the end of the third period. Jewell did outscore the Eagles 13-10 over the final eight minutes but the deficit was too large to overcome as they fell 57-39.
Along with Nelson's 13 points and ten rebounds,
Kayla Harrell added seven points, while
Chris Keys pulled down four boards.
Up next Jewell will travel to No. 4 Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon at Knights Hall. Tipoff between the Cardinals and Knights will be at 12:00 p.m. CST and can be seen live on the GLVC Sports Network.
