The William Jewell volleyball team completed the 2017 season on Saturday afternoon with a loss to Missouri S&T 3-2 by scores of 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 16-25, 14-16. The Cardinals finish the season with an overall record of 10-21 and 4-14 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- SET ONE: After falling behind 13-10, the Cardinals battled back and took a 20-18 advantage on consecutive Miner errors. Missouri S&T tied the set at 23-23 but a kill from Stefanie Richterkessing and a Miner error gave the Cardinals the set 25-23.
- SET TWO: Jewell led by as many as four in the second set on their way to the 25-20 win. The Cardinals scored seven of the final 10 points, led by three kills from Richterkessing.
- SET THREE: The Cardinals trailed by as many as five in set three before mounting a rally. Trailing 23-19, Jewell received a kill from Maddie Wingert, followed by two Miner errors to pull within one at 23-22. A Cardinal error and a kill from Missouri S&T's Emilee Schlader gave the Miners the set 25-23.
- SET FOUR: The fourth set was all Missouri S&T as they led by as many as nine before taking the set 25-16.
- SET FIVE: The Cardinals looked as though they would run away with the win, jumping out to an 11-5 advantage in the finale behind four kills from Wingert. However, the Miners got five kills and two blocks to tie things up at 14-14. Two Cardinal errors sealed the set for Missouri S&T 16-14.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Neither team was able to find a rhythm on offense as Jewell hit just .077 while the Miners posted a .097 attack percentage.
- After leading 5-3 in total blocks after three sets, the Cardinals managed just three the remainder of the match while the Miners posted seven, including four in the critical fourth set.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Wingert led all players with 16 kills on a .265 attack percentage while Quinn followed closely with 15.
- Weigel posted 34 assists and 16 digs while Lauren Castaneda added 21 assists.
- Three other players collected double-digit digs led by Olivia Tolberd's 30. Richterkessing grabbed 16 and Codi Winslow 14.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- Despite closing the year on a five-match losing streak, the Cardinals posted ten wins in 2017, giving them back-to-back double-digit win seasons since the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
SEASON IN REVIEW
- Senior Grace Miller completed her time in a Jewell uniform as the career leader with 56 solo blocks in the NCAA era. She is also ranked sixth with 1,649 total attacks and 358 sets played, second in total blocks with 261, and third with 586 kills.
- Johnson closes her Cardinal career ranked ninth with 278 sets played, and 1,202 attacks. Her 200 blocks finishes third while her 400 career kills is eighth.
- Weigel leaves the program ranked second with 1,845 total assists and 5.18 assists per set. She also posted 765 digs (6th), 85 service aces (3rd), and 355 sets played (7th).
- Winslow appeared in 164 career sets which ranks 20th in the NCAA era and collected 374 total career digs.
- Tolberd, who still has one season to play set the single season digs record for the second consecutive year, finishing with 667. The junior libero will begin her senior season in 2018 needing just 343 digs to become the Cardinal's all-time career leader.
