The William Jewell women's basketball team dropped a 62-42 decision to Pittsburg State on Sunday afternoon at the Central Missouri Invitational. The loss drops Jewell to 0-3 on the young season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q: The opening frame saw the Cardinals and Gorillas in a back-and-forth battle. Natalie Closser hit a lay up to give Jewell a 17-15 lead but Pitt State scored five consecutive points to take a 20-17 advantage after the first ten minutes.
- 2Q: Neither team scored through the first three minutes of quarter two before Rhyann Fisher broke the ice with a jumper to pull the Cardinals within one at 20-19. After another two minute drought Adriana Rodriguez put Jewell back on top 21-20 before the Gorillas closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to hold a 29-23 lead at the break.
- 3Q: Pitt State grew their lead as large as 12 in the third frame as Megan Maher hit a free throw with just under 3:30 remaining. A three pointer from Sydney Offield followed by a jumper from Lindsey McCoy brought the Cards back within five at 45-38 within under a minute to go.
- 4Q: The Gorillas used a 17-4 run over the final ten minutes to push the score to the final of 62-42.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- A traditionally strong long range shooting team the Cardinals connected on just two of 25 three point attempts.
- The Gorillas grabbed 12 offensive boards that led to 15 second chance points.
TURNING POINT
- PSU's Paige Imhoff hit a layup with six seconds remaining in the third quarter to kick start the Gorilla's 19-4 run to end the game.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Offield topped the Cardinals with 17 points while McCoy led with five rebounds and two blocked shots.
