Offense Comes Alive as Cardinals Top Graceland for First Win

The William Jewell women's basketball team downed Graceland University 88-59 on Monday night in the Mabee Center for their first win of the 2017-18 season. The Cardinals move to 1-3 on the season while the Yellowjackets fall to 3-5. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1Q: Jewell came out of the gate quickly with 15-5 lead, led by four points a piece from Kayla Harrell and Adriana Rodriguez. The Cardinals maintained their ten point advantage through the end of the first period leading 22-12 as eight different players scored in the opening ten minutes. 
  • 2Q: The Yellowjackets cut the lead to as few as a six before back-to-back three point shots from Kaiti Butaud and Hayden Butler made it a 16 point advantage at the half as Jewell led 41-25. 
  • 3Q: The third quarter was the Katie Finn show as the senior connected on four three point shots to help the Cardinals push the lead as high as 25 at 59-34. Graceland put together a 10-2 to close the quarter trailing 61-44. 
  • 4Q: Over the final ten minutes, the Cards led by as many as 30 as the Jewell bench got involved. Kaitlyn Baird and Macyn Wilbers each hit big shots while Claire Burch pulled down three boards in just three minutes of play. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals trailed only once during the game at 3-2 just 38 seconds into the first quarter. 
  • The Cardinals forced 17 turnover that led to 24 points. 
  • The Graceland bench managed just three points while Jewell put up 35 by non-starters.
  •  Jewell collected 23 offensive rebounds while allowing the Yellowjackets just seven. 

TURNING POINT
  • Finn hit a three point shot on consecutive possessions that turned a 19 point lead in a 25 point advantage for the Cardinals. 

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Finn led three players in double figures with 20 points on 6-of-9 from behind the arc. Rodriguez added 12 points while Sydney Offield chipped in 11. 
  • Sophomore Rhyann Fisher nearly posted a double-double with eight rebounds and seven assists. 
  • Rodriguez added six rebounds while Harrell and Offield dished out four assists a piece. 

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • The last time Jewell hit 15 three point shots was against Park University in January 2006.  

UP NEXT 
The Cardinals will be heading out on the road for the Thanksgiving holiday as they take part in the Holiday Inn Denver Cherry Creek Classic. The Cardinals will take on Colorado Christian on Friday and the host Metropolitan State-Denver on Saturday.
