Maddie Nelson continued to add to her legacy as she proved to be clutch down the stretch, hitting the game winning shot with just one second remaining to give the Cardinals a 61-59 overtime victory at Saint Joseph's College on Saturday afternoon. The win is the third in a row for Jewell and brings their overall record to 11-11, and 7-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The overtime in itself was quite a feat for the Cardinals as they rallied from ten points down to tie the game and force the extra period. Jewell, who played this weekend minus guard
Kayla Harrell, struggled offensively in the opening half as they trailed the Pumas 25-18 at the break.
After the intermission,
Katie Finn and
Chris Keys combined for 22 of the Cards 33 points. Jewell did not close the gap until the 2:05 mark of the third quarter as Keys hit two free throws to give Jewell a 35-34 lead before ending the period knotted up at 38. Over the final ten minutes, the Pumas gained a five point advantage with just under four minutes to play. From there Keys went to work, scoring all seven of Jewell's points over the final 3:30 of regulation, including a lay up with just four seconds on the clock to tie the game at 51.
In the overtime period Finn hit two of her game-high seven three pointers to keep Jewell within striking distance for Nelson's jumper at the buzzer that sealed the win.
Overall the Cardinals continued to show improvement offensively, shooting nearly 41 percent from the floor and 46 percent from behind the arc. The Cardinal bench also came up big, outscoring their counterparts 22-4.
Finn poured in a team-high 24 points while Keys added 16. Nelson gave Jewell three in double-figures with ten points to go along with five assists.
The Cardinals return home for a quick stop as they host McKendree on Monday, Feb. 13 for a make up game. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
