The William Jewell College men's tennis team opened the spring dual meet season on Saturday with a 5-2 loss against University of Illinois-Springfield at Northland Racquet Club in Kansas City, Mo. 

The Cardinals picked up one win in doubles and one in singles for their two points. At No. 1 doubles the tandem of senior Amery Clews and junior Marc Gartner scored an 8-3 win.  Newcomer Timo Kiesslich and freshman Bjorn Myers fell behind 4-1 at No. 2 doubles and rallied to take a brief 6-5 lead before UIS won three straight games for the 8-6 win.  Sophomore Caul Pearson and freshman Hayden Fulk fell at No.3 8-3.

Kiesslich picked up a straight sets win at No. 3 singles, 6-3 and 6-2 while Gartner pushed his opponent to three sets at No. 2.  Clews lost a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 contest at No.1 and Myers was also edged in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

The Cardinals 1-1 overall this season, will travel to Seward, Neb., on Thursday to take on Concordia at 5:00 p.m.
