The William Jewell softball team earned a 7-6 extra inning win in game two of a double header to earn a split at No. 10 Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon. Jewell fell in game one 8-0 in five innings. The Cardinals now stand at 8-10 overall and 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
GAME ONE | Cardinals 0 - No. 10 Southern Indiana 8
In the opener after a scoreless opening frame, the Screaming Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the second, and added two more in the third to take an early 6-0 lead. In the fifth, USI tacked on two runs on an RBI single to take the walk off 8-0 win.
USI starter Jennifer Leonhardt (9-1) allowed just four Cardinal base runners, including two hits, those coming off the bats of
Emily Hoover and
Brooke Bernard (double).
Sarah Lewis (1-3) took the loss, going 1 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks.
GAME TWO | Cardinals 7 - No. 10 Southern Indiana 6 (9 Innings)
In the night cap, Jewell jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, as Hoover scored on a fielder's choice by
Lindsay Glynn in the top of the second inning.
The Cardinals blew the game open with a three run third inning as Bernard and
Sydne Brashear connected on singles before Hoover launched her fifth home run of the season over the left center field wall to put Jewell on top 4-0.
The Cards tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth, as a fielder's choice by
Anna Biondo allowed Hoover to score after three consecutive singles loaded the bases.
Taylor Alarcon then recorded a pinch hit single to center which scored
Madi Giles and gave Jewell a 6-0 advantage.
The Screaming Eagles got on the board in the sixth inning with a run after a double by Marleah Fossett, but a foul out ended the USI rally.
In the bottom of the seventh, Southern Indiana made things interesting, scoring five runs on three hits and took advantage of two Cardinal errors in the frame, to ultimately tie the game at six and force extra innings.
Both teams went quietly through the eighth inning before Jewell took a one-run lead in the ninth. Bernard and
Kelsey Morgan led off the inning with back-to-back singles, followed by
Ashlyn Sutton's single to load the bases with just one out. Giles stepped to the plate and sent the first pitch she saw to center field for the RBI sacrifice fly, scoring
Gabby Brown, who had pinch ran for Bernard.
Madelynne Greenstreet (1-1) sat the Eagles down quietly in the bottom of the frame to earn her first win of the season. Greenstreet went two complete innings allowing just one hit and striking out one. Biondo took the no-decision after tossing seven innings, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits, with three strikeouts.
The Cardinals out hit USI 13-9, led by three a piece from Hoover and Sutton. Bernard and Giles each also posted two hits.
