Cardinals Win Game Two 6-3 to Split with No. 10 UIndy

For the second time in eight days the William Jewell softball team earned a split with the No. 10 ranked team in the nation. After facing Southern Indiana last weekend, it was Indianapolis Greyhounds who brought the national ranking on Saturday and took game one 11-0 in five innings. The Cardinals responded with a 6-3 win in game two and now stand at 10-13 overall and 3-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

GAME ONE | Cardinals 0 - UIndy 11
In the opener, the Greyhounds jumped on top early with a four runs second inning, before adding two in the third, one in the fourth, and a grand slam in the fifth to seal Jewell's fate.

The Cardinals put the lead off runner on in the first two innings as Madelynne Greenstreet and Madi Giles led off their respective frames with singles but both were left stranded.

Jewell's best scoring opportunity of the game came in the fourth inning as Brooke Bernard dropped a single behind third base, followed by Giles reaching on single to second to give the Cards two on with just one out. Unfortunately the following two batters struck out and stranded the third and fourth runners of the game.

Overall, the Cards managed just four hits off the Greyhound starter Lauren Honkomp (16-1) with two coming off the bat of Giles.

Taylor Friesen was saddled with the loss, going three innings and allowing six earned runs on eight hits.

GAME TWO | Cardinals 6 - UIndy 3
In the nightcap, the Cards gave the UIndy their first conference loss of the season and snapped an 11 game winning streak by the Hounds.

Freshman Emily Hoover broke the ice first with a solo home run, her seventh of the season, to give Jewell 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but this was just the first of five runs the Cards would score in the frame. Despite totaling just three hits, Jewell took advantage of multiple UIndy miscues and saw three different Greyhound pitchers in the inning.

Following Hoover's long ball, Giles and Kelsey Morgan reached base and scored on a wild pitch and a single from Lindsay Glynn. Gabby Brown, who had walked, then scored on a deep sacrifice fly from Greenstreet before Glynn scored on yet another wild pitch. Sydne Brashear, who saw her on base streak snapped on Saturday, also singled in the inning but was left stranded.

They Greyhounds got a run back in the top of the fourth as Dani Turner singled and later scored on a Cardinal error. UIndy made things interesting in the following inning, scoring two runs to cut the Jewell lead to 5-3.

The Cardinals responded by scoring an insurance run in the bottom of the frame as Greenstreet singled and scored on a double from Bernard.

From there it was Anna Biondo (8-3) who shut the door. The sophomore hurler faced the minimum over the final two frames, including a three pitch sixth inning. Biondo earned her seventh complete game of the year, going all seven innings, allowing just eight hits and two earned runs, while striking out four.

The Cardinals posted six hits, led by two from Glynn, while the freshman right fielder, along with Hoover, Bernard, and Greenstreet all had one RBI.
