The William Jewell softball team pulled out a Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep on Saturday of Maryville University at the Spratt Sports Complex. The Cardinals won by scores of 2-0 and 5-4 to move to 14-16 overall and 6-6 in GLVC play. The Saints fell to 14-18 and 4-7 in league play.
GAME ONE | Cardinals 2 - Maryville 0
In Saturday's open the Cardinal bats were held quiet for majority of the game as Maryville's Nikki Taylor allowed just three total hits. Of those, two were RBIs as
Madi Giles came through with a double in the third inning to score
Lindsay Glynn, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Kelsey Morgan followed with a solo home run in the fourth inning to give the Cards the final margin of 2-0.
As good as Taylor was in the circle for the Saints, Jewell freshman
Sarah Lewis (3-4) was even better. The right hander went all seven innings, allowing a season-low five hits, and earned her first career shutout.
GAME TWO | Cardinals 5 - Maryville 4
In the night cap, the Cardinals got on the board first with a run in the second inning as
Ashlyn Sutton dropped a single to left field to score
Emily Hoover who doubled to lead off the frame.
The Saints took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, as Jewell starter
Anna Biondo labored through the inning, allowing two runs, two hits and walking three batters.
In the fifth the Cardinals regained the lead, scoring four runs on three hits and took advantage of two Maryville errors. After Glynn started the rally with an infield single, Giles again came up with the big hit to tie the game at two on an infield single of her own.
Brooke Bernard reached on an error to set the table for Hoover who blasted her team leading ninth home run of the season over the left center field wall to make it 5-2 Cardinals.
The Saints made things interesting in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs with two outs before a foul out to first base ended the threat and gave Jewell the sweep.
The Cardinals posted seven hits, led by two from Hoover and
Sydne Brashear.
Outside of the fourth inning, it was yet another strong performance for Biondo (10-4) who earned her tenth win in the circle. The sophomore went seven innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs while striking out seven.
