The William Jewell softball team dropped both ends of a double header at Illinois Springfield on Friday evening by scores of 6-2 and 10-1 in five innings. The Cardinals fall to 25-25 overall and 14-14 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
GAME ONE | Illinois Springfield 6 - Cardinals 2
After a rain delay of more than three hours the Cardinals finally took the field just after 5:30 p.m. and it took a while more before either team could break the ice on the scoreboard.Â
Jewell threatened early as
Madi Giles and
Brooke Bernard both reached base on a single and a walk to open the game, but were left stranded.Â
Illinois Springfield broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning with six runs on four hits and one error to take a 6-0 lead. The Cards scored two runs in the top of the sixth as Bernard walked and advanced to third on a double from
Emily Hoover.
Sydne Brashear got Jewell on the board with an RBI single to left field followed by Hoover scoring on a wild pitch.Â
The Cardinals totaled six hits, with two each from Giles and Brashear, while Bernard drew two base on balls.Â
Anna Biondo (17-8) took the loss in the circle after going 4.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits, with four strikeouts.Â
GAME TWO | Illinois Springfield 10 - Cardinals 1 (5 Innings)
In the nightcap, the Prairie Stars scored early and often, leading 7-0 after just three innings. In the fourth
Kelsey Morgan singled down the left field line to score Hoover who had also singled.Â
UIS added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the game in five innings.Â
Jewell managed just four hits off UIS starter Jaycee Craver, led by two from Hoover. Bernard and Morgan also grabbed one hit a piece.Â
Freshman
Sarah Lewis dropped to 7-9 on the season after going 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs, only two earned, on six hits. Junior
Taylor Friesen also appeared in relief for 1.2 innings of work in both ends of the double header.Â

The Cardinals will close out the 2017 regular season on Saturday afternoon as they will take on McKendree on the road, with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. Jewell will be looking to rebound and clinch a spot in the GLVC Championships for the fourth time since joining the league in 2012.Â
