The William Jewell College men's tennis team rallied for a dramatic 5-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in league play.
In doubles action, Jewell's lone win came at the No. 1 spot, where first-year players
Timo Kiesslich and
Bjorn Myers took an 8-4 decision.
Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, Kiesslich evened the match score with a straight set win at No. 1 singles and Jewell took a brief 3-2 lead when
Caul Pearson also won in straight sets at No. 3. Myers fell in a three-set thriller that evened the match score 3-3 before
Brian Wohlers disposed of local standout Griffin Turnage 6-1, 6-2 at
No. 4 singles.
The Bulldogs took No. 6 singles setting the stage for the deciding match at No. 5 singles with freshman
Hayden Fulk. Fulk dropped the first set 7-5 and trailed 3-2 in the second before pulling out the second set 6-4. In the decisive set for the entire match, Fulk won, 6-2, to clinch Jewell's first GLVC victory of the season.
The Cardinals return to the courts tomorrow taking on Quincy University at 11:00 a.m.
