The William Jewell softball team saw their 2017 season come to an end on Friday afternoon with a loss to Truman State in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. The Cardinals fell by a score of 7-0 and finish the year 25-27 overall and 14-14 in regular season GLVC play.
Truman State used two big innings in the middle of the elimination game to score all seven runs. In the top of the third, the Bulldogs scored three runs on three hits before adding four additional runs on four hits and one error in the following frame.
In the bottom of the fifth the Cardinals threatened as
Sydne Brashear and
Madelynne Greenstreet posted back-to-back singles but Truman turned a double-play and erased Greenstreet and batter
Kelsey Morgan for out number three. Jewell put runners on base in five of the seven innings but couldn't score.
The Cards were outhit 12-5 led by two from Brashear.
Anna Biondo (17-10) suffered her second loss of the day, going 3.1 innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out four.
Sarah Lewis and
Taylor Friesen also appeared in the game.
Jewell will lose just one player to graduation, in utility player
Maddi Cox, and will welcome back all their everyday starters, including three-time All-GLVC outfielder
Madi Giles and a solid ace in Biondo.
