The William Jewell women's basketball team outscored Rockhurst 19-12 in the fourth quarter to win 64-61 in comeback fashion Thursday night on the road. With the win, the Cardinals move to 6-5 on the season and 3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q: The Cardinals opened the game fast taking a 10-3 lead led by four points from Lindsey McCoy and forcing the Hawks into five early turnovers. From there the Hawks went on a 10-2 run to regain the lead 13-12 with just over three minutes remaining. Kaiti Butaud hit one of two free throws after time expired to give Jewell an 18-14 lead after one quarter.
- 2Q: Rockhurst held the Cardinals scoreless for nearly seven minutes, meanwhile going on a 13-0 run to lead by as many as nine (27-18) late in the half. A bucket by Kayla Harrell with 3:20 remaining ended the drought and pulled Jewell within 20-27. The Hawks led 30-24 at the break.
- 3Q: Rockhurst again opened the quarter quickly going up by eight (34-26) before a 11-2 run put Jewell back on top 37-36. The two teams traded points the rest of the quarter as Jewell trailed 49-45 entering the final frame.
- 4Q: The Cardinals trailed majority of the fourth quarter before putting together a final rally sparked by a three pointer from Katie Finn at the 3:50 mark to put Jewell back on top 57-55. The Cards outscored Rockhurst 8-2 over the final four minutes to take the 64-61 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After shooting just 34 percent in the opening half, the Cardinals connected on 54.5 percent of their shots in the second half while holding Rockhurst to 36 percent.
- The Cardinals used their defense to keep things close in the early going, forcing the Hawks into 12 first half turnovers and 17 total for 24 points.
- There were ten lead changes and three ties in this battle of crosstown rivals.
- Jewell allowed 15 offensive boards by Rockhurst, which is the second highest this season, leading to 16 points for the Hawks.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Finn led all scorers with 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting to go along with four assists and two steals.
- Harrell added 17 points and a game high nine boards
- Sydney Offield turned in an all-around impressive game with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
- McCoy gave the Cardinals four players in double figures with 11 points and three blocks.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- The Cardinals 3-1 start in GLVC play is their best since joining the league in 2011-12.
