Cardinals Fall at Southwest Minnesota State

The William Jewell women's basketball team dropped a 90-67 contest on the road at Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday afternoon. The loss puts Jewell at 1-2 on the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Quarter: A layup by Kiara Bradley with just over three minutes to play in the opening quarter put Jewell on top by six early. The Mustangs cut the margin to just two at the end of the first period. 
  • 2nd Quarter: The Cardinals got off to a hot start in the second quarter as back-to-back buckets from Bradley put Jewell on top by seven at the 7:22 mark. From there the Mustangs rallied and went on a 24-7 run to turn a seven point deficit into a 10 point halftime lead. 
  • 3rd Quarter: Southwest Minnesota expanded their lead to 28 during the third quarter and led 73-45 heading into the final frame. 
  • 4th Quarter: Codee Meyers and Lea Finn combined for 11 points over the final 10 minutes of play and cut the lead to 20 late in the game. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinal bench outscored Southwest Minnesota 31-21. 
  • The Mustangs forced 11 turnovers which led to 20 points. 
  • Jewell won the battle in the paint, 34-18. 
  • After shooting 50 percent in the opening half, the Cards managed just a 44 percent clip in the second half, including 29 percent from beyond the three point line. Meanwhile, the Mustangs connected on 19-of-37 three point attempts.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals are off until after the Thanksgiving holiday when they will travel to the Missouri Western Classic on November 23-24 to take on Northwest Missouri and the host Griffons.
