Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cardinals Drop Heartbreaker at Truman, 60-59

The William Jewell women's basketball team got off a solid shot but had the ball roll off the side of the rim as the buzzer sounded in a 60-59 loss at Truman State on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals who outscored the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, fall to 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Quarter: Both teams got off to hot starts on the offensive end but neither could muster more than a three point lead. Lea Finn put in a layup with under a minute to play and the Bulldogs matched it at the other end to make it a 21-20 game in favor of the Cardinals after 10 minutes.
  • 2nd Quarter: Truman took a lead just over a minute into the second frame after a bucket from Sloane Totta. The Cardinals tied the game four times before the Bulldogs closed the half on a 8-4 run to lead 38-34 at the break.
  • 3rd Quarter: After a traditional three-point play put Truman on top by seven the Bulldogs seemed to be pulling momentum in their favor. The Cardinals did not go quietly as Claire Burch scored four points and helped Jewell pull within 49-45 at the end of the third.
  • 4th Quarter: The Cardinals kept their late run going into the final period as free throws by Kiara Bradley and Kayla Harrell pushed Jewell in front 58-54 with just over three minutes to play. Truman rallied to take a 59-58 lead but Natalie Closser hit one-of-two free throws to tie things up again at 59 with just 48 seconds to go. A foul by the Cardinals put Truman's Mackenzie Bray on the line for three shots, where she made just one and gave Jewell a chance for the win. With just 2.3 seconds on the clock the Cardinals got off a high quality shot from Bradley in the lane but the ball did not drop in Jewell's favor.
