Cardinals Blast Five Home Runs in Sweep of Quincy

The William Jewell softball team swept Quincy University by scores of 8-0 and 12-6 to close the regular season on Sunday afternoon in Quincy, Ill. The Cardinals move to 28-20 on the year, 15-13 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, and winners of six of the past seven games. 

GAME 1
Final: 8-0, Win

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T4: The Cardinals opened the scoring first with three runs on three hits in the fourth inning. Brooke Bernard sent a out-one double, her record-setting 22nd of the season, to left center, followed by a single from Phoebe Dabbour to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch scored Bernard before Emily Hoover blasted a two-run home run. (3-0, Jewell)
  • T6: Jewell put the game away, scoring five runs in the sixth inning on five hits and a Quincy error. Kelsey Morgan put a single to left to score Dabbour, followed by an error that allowed Courtney Beatty to cross the plate. Lindsay Glynn cleared the bases with a three-run shot, her second of the season over the left field wall to make it an eight run game. (8-0, Jewell)

PITCHERS
Win: Anna Biondo (12-10) earned her team-leading sixth shutout of the season, allowing just five hits while striking out five. 
Loss: MacKenzie Collier (11-9) took the loss, going four innings, giving up three earned runs.

Final: 12-6, Win

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T6: The Cardinals jumped out to a big early lead plating six runs in the opening frame. The first four batters reached base on three singles and a walk to put Jewell on top early. A bases loaded walk from Hoover and a sacrifice fly from Morgan plated Bernard and  Madelynne Greenstreet. After another single, Glynn again cleared the bases, this time with a three-RBI double to left center. (6-0, Jewell)
  • T2: Beatty sent a two-run home run to left center, scoring Dabbour who singled to push the lead to eight. (8-0, Jewell)
  • B3: The Hawks got on the board in the third inning, scoring four runs on three hits and a Jewell error. (8-4, Jewell)
  • T4: Jewell got one run back as Beatty singled and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Sarah Lewis (9-4, Jewell)
  • B4: Quincy pulled within three after a two-run home run by Kylie Powers. (9-6, Jewell)
  • T7: The Cardinals pulled away in the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits as Lewis blasted her seventh long ball of the year, a two-run shot, scoring Tori Farr. Giles got in on the home run action with a solo shot to make it a six run advantage. (12-6, Jewell)

PITCHERS
Win: Biondo (13-10) earned her second win of the day, throwing the final four innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits. 
Loss: Emily Griskell (3-5) suffered the loss, going all seven innings, giving up 12 earned runs on 13 hits.
