Cardinals Fall at Maryville

The William Jewell women's basketball team dropped a 87-75 Great Lakes Valley Conference contest on the road at Maryville University Thursday evening in St. Louis. The loss drops the Cardinals to 9-9 overall and 3-7 in GLVC play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Quarter: The Cardinals got off to a good start after a three from Natalie Denzer put Jewell up 14-10 midway through the opening period. From there the Saints went on a 9-2 run to hold a 19-16 lead after 10 minutes. 
  • 2nd Quarter: Jewell battled back to tie the game at 24 on a layup by Natalie Closser at the seven minute mark of the second quarter. The two teams traded buckets over the three minutes before a quick 5-0 spurt put the Saints on top by five. The Cardinals outscored Maryville 6-4 over the final three minutes but trailed 42-39 at the half. 
  • 3rd Quarter: Maryville scored the first nine points of the second half to expand their lead to 12 under three minutes in. Kayla Harrell hit one of two free throws to end the skid, followed by a three by Sydney Offield brought the Cards within eight. The Saints expanded the lead back to 12 before a Antoinette Mussorici went on a tear scoring eight consecutive points to bring her team within four with just over two minutes in the frame. 
  • 4th Quarter: The Cardinals scored six straight points in the fourth quarter to close the gap to five but could get no closer as Maryville grew the lead as many as 17 late in the frame. Offield and Denzer scored five points in the final minute to bring the score to the final of 87-75. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell enjoyed one of the best offensive games of the season, shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and 53 percent from behind the arc. 
  • The Cardinals committed 18 turnovers that led to 25 points for Maryville.
