Cardinals Close Season with 68-57 Loss in GLVC Tournament

The William Jewell basketball team saw their season come to a close in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon in Edwardsville, Ill. The Cardinals fell 68-57 to No. 2 seed Lewis to finish the year 14-13 while the Flyers move on to take on Bellarmine University. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Quarter: A three from Antoinette Mussorici knotted the game early but the Flyers went on a 9-0 run to open a 12-3 advantage just four minutes into the game. A triple from Kiara Bradley ended the run but Lewis hit a layup with 65 seconds in the frame to go on top by 10. 
  • 2nd Quarter: Neither team scored over the first three minutes of the second period before Lewis broke the drought with a jumper from Jessica Kelliher. Another Bradley three finally got Jewell back on the board with 6:37 to play in the half. The Flyers outscored the Cardinals 16-4 over the final six minutes to hold a 12 point edge at the break. 
  • 3rd Quarter: The teams traded points for much of the third quarter before got a three point play from Kayla Harrell and a bucket by Natalie Closser to pull within eight. The Flyers closed the period on a 6-0 run push the lead back to double digits. 
  • 4th Quarter: Lewis expanded their lead to as many as 18 before the Cardinals went on a 12-2 run over a four minute period to pull within eight with less than three minutes to play before but a three-point play by the Flyers got a traditional three point play to put the score at the final of 68-57.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals pulled down 10 offensive boards leading to 12 points. 
  • Jewell shot 41 percent from the floor compared to 46 percent by the Flyers.
