Softball Closes 2019 Season at Home

The William Jewell softball team dropped two games to Illinois Springfield on Sunday by scores of 2-1 and 3-4 in six innings. The Cardinals finish the season at 24-24 overall and 10-16 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play to come up just short of a fourth straight appearance in the postseason. 

GAME ONE
UIS 2, Jewell 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T1: The Prairie Stars jumped out to an early lead in the opener on a two-run home run by Morgan Edwards. (2-0, UIS)
  • B7: The Cardinals battled in the bottom of the seventh as Madelynne Greenstreet walked and scored on a fielder's choice but three outs stranded the bases loaded. (2-1, UIS)

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Win: Jacee Craver (13-14) earned the win going four innings and giving up just five hits and two walks. 
  • Loss: Anna Biondo (11-12) suffered the loss, working a complete game and allowing just the two earned runs. 
  • Save: Addyson Bryant (3) earned the save, tossing the final three frames. 

GAME TWO 
UIS 4, Jewell 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B2: The script was flipped in game two with the Cardinals grabbing an early lead after a two-run home run off the bat of Ashlyn Sutton. (2-0, Jewell)
  • T3: The Stars got a two-out double and home run in the third to get on the board and take the lead. (4-2, UIS)
  • B4: After a weather delay of more than an hour the Cardinals rallied in the bottom of the fourth to plate one run as Sutton doubled allowing Sarah Lewis to reach third before scoring on an error. (4-3, UIS)
  • The game was called final after just six innings due to weather.

  • Hits: Sutton (3)
  • Runs: Lewis (1), Sutton (1), Allison Rawls (1)
  • RBI: Sutton (2)

IN THE CIRCLE
  • Win: Payton Long (11-5) got the win, allowing two earned runs on four hits and six walks.
  • Loss: Greenstreet (8-6) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits. 

YOU SHOULD NOTE
The Cardinals will graduate four players in Biondo, Greenstreet, Courtney Beatty, and Madeline Culbertson. Biondo leaves the program as the all-time leader in appearances, starts, innings pitched, and wins by a pitcher. She also ranks in the top-10 in six other categories. Greenstreet also appeared in nearly 200 contests as a pitcher and outfielder and is in the top-10 in 10 different statistical categories, while Beatty is boasts four spots on career lists.
