Cardinals Shutout Bellarmine to Earn Split

The William Jewell softball team earned a 4-0 win over Bellarmine University in game two of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals fell 7-4 in the opening game of the day to move to 17-15 overall and 6-8 in league play. 

GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T1: Bellarmine wasted no time jumping out to a quick lead, scoring a run just two pitches into the game as Grace Werner doubled, stole third and scored on a fielder's choice. A two-run home run pushed the lead to three one batter later. (3-0, BU)
  • B1: In the bottom of the first, the Cardinals loaded the bases for Allison Rawls who drew a five pitch walk to put Jewell on the board. (3-1, BU)
  • T6: The Knights added four runs on six hits in the sixth to expand their lead to six. (7-1, BU)
  • B6: Courtney Beatty and Emily Hoover led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles before scoring on a three-run home run by Sarah Lewis. (7-4, BU)

IN THE CIRCLE
  • Win: Sydney Oskin (3-2) earned the win in the opener, going five innings, giving up four earned on six hits. 
  • Loss: Sarah Lewis (3-4) suffered the loss, being tagged with seven earned runs while striking out five. 
  • Save: Fussenegg (1) earned her first save of the season, working the final two innings and not allowing run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: In the nightcap, it was Jewell who jumped out to the early lead, as Madelynne Greenstreet blasted a lead off home run to center field. Lindsay Glynn followed by scoring on a passed ball to make it a two-run advantage. (2-0, Jewell)
  • B5: Lewis reached base on a two-out single, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Rawls. (3-0, Jewell)
  • B6: Greenstreet recorded another RBI in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, scoring Ashlyn Sutton. (4-0, Jewell)

  • Loss: Fussenegg (7-10) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on eight hits.
