Game Recap: Softball |

Cardinals Win Fourth Straight with Two Run-Rule Victories

The William Jewell softball team continued to roll on Saturday as they won their third and fourth straight games and departed the Drury Invitational with a clean sweep of the weekend. The Cardinals closed the tournament with wins over Newman 11-3 and Wayne State College (Neb.) 11-0, both in five innings to move to 7-5 on the season.

Game One: 11-3 vs. Newman (5 Inn.)
How it Happened
  • The Cardinals scored early and often in Saturday's opener as they plate five runs on six hits, including three straight RBI doubles by Allison Rawls, Sarah Lewis, and Lauren Ledbetter
  • Things didn't slow down in the second frame as Lewis added another RBI single, followed by a bases loaded walk by Ashlyn Sutton, and a bases clearing double off the bat of Abby Dubinski to put the Cardinals on top by 10.
  • Newman scored three runs over the next two innings but Lindsay Glynn recorded her second double of the day to score Payton Totzke and end the game early.

For the Cardinals
  • The Cardinals pounded out 12 hits, including eight doubles, as five different players finished with two hits and five with two runs.
  • Dubinski led Jewell with five RBI while Lewis added two.
  • Lewis (3-3) also got the win in the circle, working a strong five frames, allowing two earned runs on six hits.

For the Jets
  • Shanda Cox led Newman with two hits.
  • Bailey Bugner (0-4) took the loss, giving up five earned on 12 hits and three walks.

Game Two: 11-0 vs. Wayne State (5 Inn.)
How it Happened
  • Much like they did in the first game, the Cardinals wasted no time jumping out to a big lead. With two outs, Jewell got RBI from Rawls, Lewis, Ledbetter, and Hailey Wall to make it 4-0 after a half inning.
  • Wall led off the fourth frame by blasting her first home run of the season followed by Glynn swiping home. A fielding error allowed Emily Hoover to cross the plate and make it 7-0.
  • Jewell was able to finish the game early as Totzke and Kelli McCallister scored on a wild pitches before Hoover roped a two-RBI double to right to bring the score to the final.

For the Cardinals
  • Wall led Jewell with three hits and two RBI. Glynn and Hoover also finished with two hits to go along with two runs and two RBI respectively.
  • Kenzie Jones (3-0) earned the win, giving up just three hits and striking out two in the shutout.

For the Wildcats
  • Three players also finished with a single hit for Wayne State who had just the three base runners the entire game.
  • Makenna Adkison (0-1) was strapped with the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits.
