Cardinals Bounce Back with Split at Emporia State

The William Jewell softball team snapped a three game skid on Wednesday afternoon as they earned a 4-2 game two win at Emporia State. The Hornets took game one 9-1 in six innings. 

Game One | 9-1, Loss
How it Happened
  • The Hornets jumped out to an early lead in the opening inning on a two-RBI single and added another run the next frame on an error. 
  • Jewell got on the board with a RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Abby Dubinski, scoring Emily Hoover
  • Emporia State scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth to end the game early. 

Game Two | 4-2, Win
How it Happened
  • In game two, it was the Cardinals who scored first on a two-RBI double to left center by Allison Rawls in the fourth inning. Lauren Ledbetter knocked a base hit through the right side to score another and put Jewell on top by three. 
  • The Hornets cut the lead to just one in their half of the fourth but a sac fly by Sarah Lewis gave the Cardinals an insurance run. 

For the Cardinals
  • Hoover led the Cardinals with two hits, including a dobule and triple, while scoring three runs. 
  • Kenzie Jones (5-1) earned the win in game two, allowing just two earned runs while striking out three. Lewis (4-5) suffered the loss, giving up seven earned on nine hits in the opener.  

For the Hornets
  • Roni Raines finished with four hits on the day while scoring three runs. Kelsey Phillips posted six RBI in the opening game. 
  • Kerrigan Dixon (7-0) remained unbeaten for the Hornets, allowing just one earned run and three hits in the opener while Brylie Bassett (1-2) took the loss in game two, giving up three earned.  

Up Next 
The Cardinals open GLVC play this weekend as they travel to Maryville for a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m.
