LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team got off to a hot start on Friday night in their season opener as they took the opening set 25-16 against Quincy University. The Hawks rallied, however, and won the last three sets to drop the Cardinals to 0-1 on the young season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell jumped out to an early 10-5 lead behind two kills from Paityn Hardison and Grace Baucom along with two blocks by Jorey Luebbert to force an early Quincy timeout. The Hawks responded and pulled with two midway through the set but the Cardinals won six of the final seven points to win the opening set.
- Set two started much like the first, only in reverse, as Quincy jumped on top, 11-5. Trailing 16-9, the Cardinals scored five straight, aided by three Hawk errors, to pull with two but Quincy scored the final five points to win 25-18.
- The Hawks again jumped out to the early advantage in the third set but the Cardinals rallied, going on a 10-3 run, to pull within one, 21-20, after a big kill by Anna Godfredsen. Quincy regained momentum though and scored four of the final five to take the set, 25-21.
- The finale was a back-and-forth battle until a late 9-3 run by Quincy sealed the match.
