Cardinals Wrap up Lewis Dome Invite with First Win

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The William Jewell softball team earned their first win of the 2021 season on Sunday with a split on the final day of the Lewis Dome Invitational. The Cardinals dropped the opener, 9-0, to No. 24 Grand Valley State before rallying from down four to defeat former GLVC foe Wisconsin-Parkside.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Parkside scored the game's first two runs on an RBI single by Dani Evans before scoring herself to make it an early 3-0 lead for the Rangers. 
  • UWP added an additional run in the top of the third but Jewell got on the board in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double off the bat of Tori Farr
  • After three walks loaded the bases, Allison Rawls gave the Cardinals their first lead of the day with a grand slam to put Jewell on top, 5-4. 
  • With the score knotted at five in the final inning, Sabrina Olmo led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI knock from Rawls. 
 
FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Rawls led the Cardinals with three hits and a career-high five RBI.
  • Farr and Olmo also had two hits.
  • Abby Vandiver (1-0) earned her first career win, working the final two frames, striking out three, without allowing a base runner. 
 
FOR THE RANGERS
  • The Rangers finished with 10 hits, led by three players with two.
  • Tijanne Ross took the loss, allowing five earned runs over the final three innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grand Valley jumped on top early with a run in the top of the first and added another in the fourth. The Lakes blew things open in the fifth frame with four runs on five hits before adding an additional three runs in the following inning.

  • Grand Valley finished with 16 hits, led by three each from Taylor Rieger, Megan Koenigshof and Bailey Thatcher. 
  • Ashley Plantek (1-0) got the win with seven strikeouts.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals are scheduled to travel to Springfield, Missouri next Friday for the Drury Invitational, weather pending, where they will take on Nebraska-Kearney and Northwest Missouri State. Jewell is scheduled to also play Upper Iowa and Midwestern State (TX) on Saturday.
