LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team put together a 23-point fourth quarter but came up just short on Friday night, falling to Ottawa University (Kan.) 63-62. The Cardinals drop to 2-11 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell got of to a a strong start, jumping out to an 8-2 lead after three pointers from Emree Zars and Ayden Shannon. The Braves went on a short run to tie the game at 11 but the Cards followed by an 11-2 spurt of their own, capped by a Chloe Frank three to open up a nine point advantage.
- Late in the second half, with Jewell on top by six, the Braves outscored the Cardinals 10-0 to take a 35-31 lead into the locker room.
- Things went cold for Jewell in the third quarter as they were held to just three free throws for almost seven minutes. A Zars bucket ended the drought but Ottawa had pushed their lead to 16.
- Janiyah Hendricks put in a layup to extend the Braves lead to their largest of the day at 17 to start the fourth quarter. From there, the Cardinals chipped away getting the deficit down to single digits for good after a layup from Bree Shannon. Jewell forced five turnovers over the last three-plus minutes, including one with just 1:15 to go when Bree Shannon found Frank for three to make it a two point game. The Braves hit two free throws with 14 ticks on the clock making a Jewell three at the buzzer not enough to overcome the deficit.
KEY STATS
- Ayden Shannon put up a new career high with 19 points while Frank added 14 and Zars 12.
- Jewell forced 25 turnovers, the most since December 2020, leading to 20 points.
- Ottawa out rebounded the Cardinals 44-33, led by 19 from Nicole Brown.
