Combs Wins 400th Game with Sweep of Truman

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - William Jewell head softball coach Dustin Combs got career win No. 400 on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals swept Truman, 12-3 and 14-9. Jewell moves to 16-26 on the season, 9-15 in conference play. 

GAME ONE: Jewell 12, Truman 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The day couldn't have started any better for the Cardinals scored five runs in the top of the opening inning. Aly Manhart got things started with a bases loaded RBI walk, followed by a double from Kenzie Jones and RBI by Abby Dubinski and Sophia Lopez
  • Jewell added a run in the third on an RBI single by Dubinski but the Bulldogs plated two in the bottom half to get back within four. 
  • The Cards scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth before putting things away with three in the seventh on RBI from Payton Totzke, Jace Laws and Hailey Wall

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lopez led the Cardinal offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBI while Dubinski added two hits and two RBI. 
  • Totzke finished with a team high three base hits while eight different players had an RBI and nine scored at least one run. 
  • Jones (7-10) earned the complete game win, striking out five batters. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 14, Truman 9 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After each team scored one run in the first inning, Jewell took the lead in the third on an RBI single from Manhart, but the Bulldogs got a grand slam from Maddie McGonegle to go take the lead in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-2 lead. 
  • The Cardinals rallied quickly, scoring three runs on three hits to tie the game at five. 
  • Manhart led off the fifth with a solo home run, her first of the season, followed by an RBI fielder's choice by Totzke to give Jewell a two run lead. 
  • Leading 9-7 heading into the final inning, the Cardinals added five insurance runs, capped by a three run home off the bat of Dubinski on their way to the win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Manhart finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and a home run. 
  • Dubinski added four RBI while Jones scored three runs. 
  • The Cardinals drew 12 walks and scored a season best 14 runs. 
  • Sammie Welt (1-3) earned the win, working 3.1 innings in relief.
