LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's soccer team opened the season on Sunday afternoon with a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup against crosstown rival Rockhurst. The Cardinals fell 4-0 to drop to 0-1 on the year. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Cardinals got an early shot from Walker Bond but it was Rockhurst who drew the first strike with a goal from Cristoforo LiCavoli in the 13th minute from 15 yards out. 
• The Hawks added two more scores in the first half to hold a 3-0 lead at the break. 
• Jewell got off two shots early in the second half, including one from Henry Staebell that hit the top crossbar but couldn't score. 
• Rockhurst added an additional score in the 65th minute on a free kick assist to bring the score the final.  

KEY STATS

• Jewell out shot the Hawks 11-9 but had just three on goal. Ethan Nichols and Aidan Neill each had two shots to lead the Cardinals. 
• Jose Arrellano recorded five saves in his debut in goal.

The Cardinals continue their early home stand next weekend, hosting Drury on Friday evening followed by Southwest Baptist on Sunday afternoon.
