ROLLA, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team put together a fourth quarter rally on Saturday at Missouri S&T to pull back within single digits but came up short, falling 79-68. The Cardinals drop to 4-19 on the season and 2-11 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell came out hot in the opening quarter, as Ayden Shannon and Bree Shannon hit back-to-back three pointers to give the Cardinals an early 11-5 lead. Bree Shannon was nearly unstoppable over the next three minutes, scoring nine points as Jewell opened up a 12-point lead. Missouri S&T went on a 14-3 run over the final 2:55 to go in front 25-24.
- The Cardinal offense struggled in the second period, going 5-for-19 from the floor as the Miners expanded their lead to 13 at the break, 50-37.
- Both teams played even in the third quarter, scoring 17 points on 46.7% shooting to make it a 67-54 game heading into the final 10 minutes.
- After Missouri S&T pushed their lead to 15 the Cardinals put together a rally as the Shannon sisters scored five points followed by a layup from Emree Zars to cut the deficit to just eight. The Miners got back to double digits with two minutes to play but but two buckets from Katie Knock made things tight cutting it to 75-68 with just 24 seconds on the clock. The Cardinals ran short on time as MST connected on all four free throws down the stretch.
KEY STATS
- Bree Shannon tied her career high with 19 points on 7-of-11 from the floor while Chloe Frank also had 10 points.
- Emree Zars added nine points and a team high seven rebounds as the Cardinals out-rebounded Missouri S&T 41-38 with 15 offensive boards.
