Cardinals Earn First GLVC Win with 77-67 Win Over UMSL

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team picked up their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season on Thursday night with a 77-67 victory at Missouri-St. Louis. The victory moves the Cardinals to 2-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference action. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got off to a hot start, shooting 80% in the opening period, and jumping out to a 17-6 lead after a layup by Katie Knock. A bucket from Emree Zars and a free throw from Knock at the end of the first quarter, to extend the Jewell lead to 27-12. 
  • UMSL had the advantage in the second frame, shooting 62.5% from the floor, while holding the Cardinals to just 25%. The Tritons climbed back in the game with a 24-6 run to retake the lead, 36-33. Back-to-back threes from Ayden Shannon knotted things up at 40 at the break. 
  • The Cards used an early 8-0 run in the second half, to go in front 54-46 after three quarters. 
  • Kate Hillyer started the fourth period with consecutive triples before Bree Shannon added two free throws to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the night at 62-46. UMSL made a late run, pulling back within nine but Bree Shannon got a traditional three point play to seal the win.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ayden Shannon led four players in double figures with a career high 27 on 10-of-18 from the floor and 5-of-7 from long range. 
  • Zars and Bree Shannon each score 10 points with the latter grabbing a team best sevent rebounds. 
  • Chloe Frank scored 16 points and six rebounds while Averi Porter had four assists. 
  • Jewell turned the ball over just four times, their lowest total since having three against Central Bible on December 7, 2023.

Jewell continues GLVC action on Saturday as they travel to McKendree University.
