Cardinals Drop Tough Doubleheader to Southwest Baptist

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team was on the wrong end of a tightly contested doubleheader on Wednesday night, falling 1-0 and 5-1 in 11 innings to Southwest Baptist. The Cardinals drop to 4-16 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.

Game 1 (SBU 1, Jewell 0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After six scoreless innings, Southwest Baptist loaded the bases with three straight singles. A failed squeeze play gave the Cardinals an out at the plate but a wild pitch to the next batter scored the game's only run.

KEY STATS
Game 2 (SBU 5, Jewell 1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell broke the ice in the bottom of the fifth inning of game two as Mya Zavala walked and was pinch ran for by Kelch. Payton Totzke singled up the middle to score Kelch and put the Cardinals on the board.
  • A two errors in the top of the seventh allowed the tying run to cross the plate and force extra frames.
  • With two runners on in the top of the 11th, another miscue pushed the go-ahead run across to give SBU the lead. The Bearcats added two more to go in front 5-1.
  • Jewell didn't go down without a fight as the first two runners reached via a walk but a strikeout and flyout ended the rally.

KEY STATS
  • The Cardinals put up eight hits, led by three from Totzke in the night cap. Chung added two base knocks.
  • The two teams combined for nine errors in game two.
  • Sydney Parra (0-8) suffered the loss despite giving up just two earned runs over 10.1 innings of work while striking out six.
