Maryville Downs Cardinals in Doubleheader

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team fell in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Maryville by finals of 6-3 and 8-6. The Cardinals drop to 5-25 overall and 0-12 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

GAME 1 (Maryville 6, Jewell 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maryville took the first lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on three hits. 
  • Amanda Chung walked to lead off the fourth and came around to score on an error by the left fielder to put the Cardinals on the board. 
  • Payton Totzke singled in the top of the fifth and scored on a sac fly from Chung, to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. 
  • The Saints added two in the bottom half of the fifth and another in the sixth to expand their lead to four. The Cardinals got one back in the top of the seventh as Chung singled up the middle to score Addie Bell who had doubled but came up short, 6-3.

KEY STATS
  • Sabrina Olmo had two hits for the Cardinals, including a triple, while Chung drove in two.
  • Sammie Welt (2-8) took the loss, allowing six earned on nine hits while striking out five batters.  

GAME 2 (Maryville 8, Jewell 6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Saints scored first in the nightcap, plating two in the bottom of the opening frame. 
  • Jewell quickly tied things up as Lauren Ledbetter doubled to score Kenzie Stahl. Abby Harder came on to pinch run and scored on an error by the Maryville center fielder, but the Saints retook the lead in the bottom half on an RBI double. 
  • In the fifth, the Cardinals bats broke out with six hits, leading to three runs. With the bases loaded, Ella Hoffman roped a pinch hit double down the left field line to score two and put Jewell in front. Ledbetter followed up with a single up the middle to score Chung and make it 5-3 in favor of the Cardinals. 
  • The Saints got one back in the bottom half but Jewell responded with a run in the top of the sixth as Totzke reachd on an error and scored on an Olmo RBI. 
  • Maryville rallied to score four runs on six hits and an error to retake the lead for good. 

KEY STATS
  • The Cardinals roped a season high 12 hits as Olmo, Bell, Chung, Stahl and Ledbetter each had two. 
  • Hoffman and Ledbetter each picked up two RBI and a double. 
  • Olivia Wood (1-3) took the loss, working three innings in relief, allowing five earned with one strikeout. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals wrap up the short road trip on Tuesday as they travel Emporia State for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
