Softball Drops Two Close Games at Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. - The William Jewell softball team fell twice on Saturday at Quincy University in two closely contested games, falling 5-4 in game one and 2-0 in the nightcap. The Cardinals fall to 7-37 overall and 0-20 in conference play. 

GAME ONE (Quincy 5, Jewell 4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After three scoreless innings, Jewell broke through in the top of the fourth as Sabrina Olmo reached on an error and stole second to get into scoring position. Another Quincy miscue allowed her to advance to third before Abby Vandiver's single up the middle to score Olmo and Amanda Chung
  • The Cardinals committed an error of their own allowing QU to get on the board and cut the lead in half but Jewell came right back with two runs in the fifth. Addie Bell and Grace Woods put back-to-back RBI doubles into left field to extend the lead to 4-1. 
  • Quincy got three runs on three hits and a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. The Cards put a runner on base in the seventh but came up empty. 

KEY STATS
  • Bell and Vandiver each picked up two hits as Jewell outhit the Hawks 7-6. 
  • Sammie Welt (3-13) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out six. 

GAME TWO (Quincy 2, Jewell 0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Quincy took the early lead with a run in the first and another in the third. 
  • The Cardinals put two on in the sixth but a strikeout ended the rally. 

KEY STATS
  • Jewell was limited to three hits in game two, from Chung, Sophia Lopez and Mya Zavala
  • Sydney Parra (1-13) suffered the loss, giving up just two earned runs on seven hits. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals wrap up the weekend on Sunday with a doubleheader at Illinois Springfield.
