KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The William Jewell softball season came to a close on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader loss at Truman State. The Cardinals, who fell 12-3 and 10-3, finish the year with an overall record of 7-41 and 0-24 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
GAME ONE (Truman 12, Jewell 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals jumped on top first in the opening game, scoring two runs in the top of the third. With two on, Addie Bell sent a base hit to right field to score Mya Zavala and Sabrina Olmo.
- The Bulldogs responded with four in the bottom half of the third and added five more in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead.
- Jewell got one back in the fifth as Zavala reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a pinch hit single from Ella Hoffman.
- Truman plated three more runs on four hits in the bottom half of the frame to end the game in five innings, 12-3.
KEY STATS
- Olmo finished with two hits while Bell drove in two to lead the Cardinals.
- Sammie Welt (3-15) suffered the loss, working four innings.
GAME TWO (Truman 10, Jewell 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Truman scored five runs in the opening frame and added one in the second to take an early 6-0 lead.
- In the top of the third, Olmo drew a bases loaded walk to put the first Cardinal run on the board.
- In her final game, senior Kelli McCallister blasted her first career run in the fourth to get Jewell back within four, 6-2.
- After the Bulldogs extended their lead back to six, Abby Vandiver hit her first long ball of the season to make it 8-3.
- The Bulldogs got a two-run home run in the fifth and kept Jewell scoreless in the seventh take the 10-3 win.
KEY STATS
- The Cardinals were limited to four hits, one each from Vandiver, McCallister, Kenzie Stahl and Lauren Ledbetter.
- Sydney Parr (1-15) suffered the loss, working the complete game with three strikeouts.
UP NEXT
Jewell will lose five seniors to graduation but return 10 players that appeared in at least 30 games along with four pitchers.
