Box Score LIBERTY, Mo - The William Jewell mens soccer team got their first tie of the season, 1-1, against the no. 11 ranked Maryville University Saints. The Cardinals move to 0-7-1 on the season, and 0-4-1 in the GLVC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a quick Maryville goal, sophomore Henry Staebell was net the Cardinal goal in the bottom corner.
- Freshman goalkeeper Olav van Zanten had four saves in the second half, including punching one over the crossbar to save what would have been a Maryville go-ahead goal.
- Teams went back and forth in the final minutes of the second half, but Jewell's back line of Sage Smotherman, Cole Hoppe, and Sam Wambold kept everything in front of them to secure the tie.
KEY STATS
- Staebell's goal was the first of his career.
- It is the first time Jewell has tied a ranked opponent since 2014 when they tied no. 10 Quincy in double overtime.
