Cardinals Close Season with Split at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The William Jewell softball team split their final doubleheader of the season on Saturday, taking on crosstown rival Rockhurst. The Cardinals won the opener, 5-3, before falling 4-1 in game two to finish 24-32 overall, a 17-win improvement from 2023, and 7-19 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

GAME ONE: Jewell 5, Rockhurst 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got on the board first in the opening inning as Tori Woodard drew a bases loaded walk to score Sabrina Olmo. The Hawks tied things up in the following frame with an RBI single.
  • Ella Hoffman's pinch hit sac fly to center plated Woodard in the top of the fourth to put the Cardinals back in front but a wild pitch in the bottom half again knotted things up.
  • In the fifth Olmo led off with a double followed by a walk to Addie Bell, putting two on for Amanda Chung who reached on a fielder's choice, scoring one. Woodard followed up with a sac fly to double up the score, 4-2.
  • The Hawks pulled within one late but an infield single in the sixth allowed Sydney Cure to cross the plate for a key insurance run.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Olmo finished with three hits and two runs while Woodard drove in two.
  • Olivia Wood (10-8) earned the win in the circle working four-plus frames, allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts.
  • Avrey Reynolds picked up her third save, tossing the final three scoreless innings.

GAME TWO: Rockhurst 4, Jewell 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both pitchers worked efficiently through the first three-plus innings until Rockhurst broke through in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on a wild pitch and an error.
  • After a two-run home run in the fifth added two more for the Hawks, Chung put a sac fly into the left field to score one but the Cardinals could get no closer.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell was limited to just two hits in game two, from Woodard and Abby Vandiver.
  • Sammie Welt (0-4) threw all six innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
