Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Jewell Hands Prairie Stars First Loss Since 2015

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The William Jewell men's soccer team won their opening GLVC game, a 2-1 road victory over the University of Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars. It marks back-to-back wins for the Cardinals who are 2-2-0 on the year including a 1-0-0 conference mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Similarly to Friday's win, Jewell found their first goal in the first 15 minutes, this time is was from Alexis Ibarra's first goal of the year assisted by Eliott Labeth.
  • Six minutes later Zach Nichols tried his luck with a shot on goal, but it was saved by the Prairie Star keeper as neither team would have a shot taken headed into halftime.
  • Already with an assist, Labeth took his only shot of the afternoon and connected on it, scoring his second goal of the year and giving Jewell a 2-0 lead. The Prairie Stars cut the lead to one goal later in the half but Jewell left the Land of Lincoln with the win.

KEY STATS
  • Keeper Umberto DiCarlo did not have any saves as the only shot on goal by the home team Prairie Stars was blocked by the team.
  •  After playing in six games in 2024 without a goal or assist, Labeth leads the squad in goals with two and is one of four Cardinals with an assist.
  • Jewell racked up seven shots in total, compared to just three by Illinois-Springfield.
  • The win marks the first over Illinois-Springfield since 2015.

Jewell continues GLVC play on Friday when they travel to face Maryville University for an afternoon contest in St. Louis.
