LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team stayed within striking distance for much of Saturday's contest against Missouri S&T but came up short, falling 73-59 to drop to 0-22 and 0-16 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maja Komaszynska gave Jewell their first lead of the day with an offensive rebound and put back but Missouri S&T followed with a 6-0 run to go back in front. The Cardinals got a three from Jacee Peterson and two buckets from Alex McGarrah to get back within two, 18-16.
- The second period opened with a Syderah Farmer three pointer to put Jewell in front but the Miners followed with a 12-2 run to lead by nine. With Missouri S&T looking for separation, Jalea Price and Mandi Pham each hit a three over the final minutes of the half as the Cardinals got back in the game and trailed by just four at the break.
- Farmer started the third much like the second period and pulled Jewell within one, 36-35. The two teams went more than two minutes without scoring before a Price triple knotted things up at 40-all.
- The Miners used a 26-8 run over the next nine minutes to open up an 18-point advantage. Jewell did not go down quietly, chipping away before a layup by Taryn Jacobs made it single digit deficit, 66-57. Missouri S&T finished on a 7-2 run to keep the Cardinals at bay.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Farmer led all scorers with 22 points while Price added a dozen.
- Rylee Thompson pulled down 10 rebounds while Jacobs and Alex McGarrah each had three assists.
- The Cardinals shot 32% from the floor and committed just 11 turnovers, their lowest mark of the season.
