Cardinals Hold On, Take Final Game Against Winona State

LIBERTY, Mo. – After dropping the first game of the day 13-2, Jewell battled back for a 6-4 win over Winona State to take the last game of the home series against the Warriors. Jewell is an even .500 (3-3) after the weekend.
 
 
Game 1 (Jewell 2, Winona State 13)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Winona State got off to a quick start, scoring seven runs in the first two innings to take an early lead.
  • An RBI infield single from Luke Isaacs scored Koen Gakstatter in the third for the first Cardinal run, followed by Isaacs scoring with the bases loaded after a fielder's choice from Austin Dahlberg.
  • The Warriors scored six unanswered runs through the remaining innings for the 13-2 win.

KEY STATS
  • Alex Smith got the start, giving up five runs while striking out a pair.
  • Isaacs went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Winona went up 2-0 in the first, when Luke Isaacs scored on a wild pitch in the bottom on the frame to cut the lead to one Warrior run.
  • After Koen Gakstatter stole second and advanced to third on an error, a sac fly scored the centerfielder to knot things up at two in the third inning.
  • Jewell poured on four runs in the fifth inning, including an RBI single from Santiago Jimenez, to take a commanding 6-3 lead.
  • The Warriors rally came up short in the final inning, leaving Jewell with the 6-4 winner in the final game of the series.

KEY STATS
  • Cameron Naber got the start for Jewell fanning two. Charlie Rambo entered in relief, striking out the first six batters he faced in order en route to the win and a seven-strikeout performance out of the bullpen. Ryan Hunt punched out a pair receiving the save.
  • Teams combined for 21 strikeouts, while Jewell out-hit the Warriors 13 to five.
  • Gakstatter was 2-for-2 with two runs.
